Who we are

We are filmmakers, Human Rights lawyers and volunteers.

We are Muslims.

The history of our Ummah must be told by ourselves. As our brothers and sisters all over the world share their stories with us, we collect and compile them into a beautiful and authentic film about our community. On this path we also encounter those who suffer from discrimination and injustice. We stand with the oppressed, pursuing with determination and legal grit all avenues to call for their justice. Inspiring resilience and preserving our history with camera and pen.

The Ummah – the Islamic world community is a confederation of people from different backgrounds, ancestry, origin and nationality who have surrendered to Allah ﷻ through Islam. We are a community without borders and yet are united in a very tangible way. We overcome distance and artificial borders through brotherhood and solidarity. We are a community united by the love for Allah ﷻ and his prophets.

“Surely this is your community, a single community, and I am your Lord; so fear Me!”

Al-Mu’minun 52

Everyone who accepts Islam becomes a member of the Ummah. All members are equal before Allah ﷻ. Race, gender or status does not discriminate. Islam brings all together in one community. By following the guidance of the Qur’an and the tradition of the Prophet ﷺ and heeding the warnings given therein, a strong fear of God and solid awareness of God (taqwa) can be achieved. In this alone does a person’s rank rise – and Allah ﷻ alone knows the hearts.

“The believers in their affection, mercy and compassion for each other are like a body: if one part of it suffers, the whole body reacts with sleeplessness and fever!”

Sahih Muslim

Ummah Project is an international movement that brings together people and organisations to achieve our shared objectives:

  • to inspire our community to persevere in the face of adversity by fostering a culture of resilience
  • to preserve and narrate our own (hi)story
  • to combat discrimination and Islamophobia by defending the universal human dignity

We are committed to serving the needs of our community and building a society that is based on mutual aid and solidarity.

We reject the notion of personal gain and recognition, as we believe that true liberation cannot be achieved through individualistic pursuits. Our goal is to work towards the collective good, and we welcome all who share this vision to join us in our struggle.

Our methods are rooted in direct action, autonomy, and horizontal organizing. We believe in the guidance of the word of Allah ﷻ, the teachings of the Prophet ﷺ and the power of our community to create positive change and will not be silenced by those who seek to maintain the status quo. Together, we will create a world that is truly just and equitable for all.

Muslims are united like a family, and are like brothers and sisters to each other. They should not be indifferent towards each other, but rather act as a unified body with a spirit of solidarity, warmth, cohesion and empathy. This unity is a hallmark of the Muslim community, and is strengthened by following the guidance of the Qur’an and the tradition of the Prophet ﷺ.

“The believers in their affection, mercy and compassion for each other are like a body: if one part of it suffers, the whole body reacts with sleeplessness and fever!”
