The community’s lawyer — taking legal action against injustice and discrimination

Status Quo Western Europe

Muslims and Islamic organizations, such as Mosques, are facing a global epidemic of institutionalized, systematic, and consistent hatred and aggression. Governments, regional and international bodies have adopted measures that disproportionately target Muslims and frame them as high-risk and at risk of extremism in response to security threats.

Muslim communities and their organizations are unfairly targeted by security measures, which restrict their right to freedom of religion and other fundamental human rights. Harmful stereotypes and tropes about Muslims and Islam are perpetuated by mainstream media, powerful politicians, influencers of popular culture, and in academic discourse.

This hostile climate creates a society in which Muslims are marginalized and excluded. Fascism is re-emerging in European societies, and Islamophobic laws are being enacted, resulting in discriminatory profiling as official policy in security contexts, unwarranted surveillance, unlawful profiling, and the normalization of Islamophobic laws and politics, such as the niqab and hijab bans.

What we do

We are the Ummah Project’s legal team — Ummah Lawyer — and we take on legal battles for our community with relentless vigour and determination to restore justice and dignity. In order to support and secure the rights of those who have had their rights taken away, have been discriminated against and have been systematically oppressed. The Ummah Lawyer steps in to support and take immediate action against governmental discriminatory policies, acts of violence and aggression. We act out of solidarity and provide support where we can, take over casework or initiate it.

Community Legal Fund

The community has recognised the dire need for advocacy and legal confrontation of injustice, and it is actively supporting the cases we take on.

Too often victims of discrimination and injustice do not take legal action because of the high legal (proceeding) costs. The Ummah Lawyer is financially supported by donations of the people of the Ummah. In this manner, the community collectively ensures that legal support is accessible, by removing the financial hurdle and covering the costs for those who cannot afford their legal battle.

Status Quo Western Europe

Institutionalised, systematic and consequent hatred and aggression against Muslims and Islamic organisations such as Mosques, have globally escalated to epidemic proportions. Governments — and regional and international bodies — have responded to all kinds of security threats, by adopting measures which disproportionately target Muslims and frame Muslims as both high-risk and at risk of extremism. Governments securities Muslim communities and their organisations. Muslims are directly restricted in their right to freedom of religion or belief and other fundamental human rights. Harmful stereotypes and tropes about Muslims and Islam are chronically reinforced by mainstream media, powerful politicians, influencers of popular culture and in academic discourse. All over the world, a hostile climate in which Muslims are placed outside of society is created. Fascism is creeping back into the midst of European societies, and Islamophobic laws are its manifestation. This has resulted in discriminatory profiling as official policy in security contexts, unwarranted surveillance, unlawful profiling, and the normalisation of Islamophobic laws and politics such as the niqab- and hijab bans.
